Transit Strike Hits Phoenix

Bus service not going to get better as strike wears on, officials say

Phoenix officials told transit passengers to keep finding alternatives to the bus as the afternoon commute isn't expected to improve while drivers are on strike -- with only a fraction of the normal routes in service.
The union representing nearly 1,000 Valley Metro bus drivers in Phoenix and Tempe continued its strike against employer Veolia Transportation Services, entering day three of the work stoppage.

Phoenix Public Transit Department Director Neal Young said the strike was difficult as bus passengers started the work week Monday morning and service levels aren't expected to improve for the afternoon commute.
"The Monday commute has been very challenging for our passengers," Young said. Service levels have "improved some but frankly it's not good enough."
Young said the evening commute will remain "significantly reduced."
As of 4:30 p.m. Monday, service hovered around 15 percent of normal service levels for bus routes Veolia operates in Phoenix.
